San Francisco Giants Team Info
The Giants finished the 2005 season with a record of 75-87. Fans who attended were no doubt displeased as their heroes finished below break even for the first time since 1996. Certainly, Giants injuries played a big part in the outcome. Barry Bonds missed the complete season, Jason Schmidt was less than one hundred percent and closer Armand Benitez missed most of the season. But try to use that excuse around the Bay Area and it will fall on deaf and unsympathetic ears. Giants fans want a winner in the proud tradition of this historic franchise.
Think of it; the Giants appeared on the baseball scene way back in 1883 as the Gothams. They became the Giants forever more a couple years later. The early years found the Giants featuring some of the biggest names sports ever produced, among them Christy Mathewson, Bill Terry and John McGraw. Playing in the Polo Grounds, the team experienced incredible highs and heartbreaking lows like four seasons with over one hundred wins or finishing fifty-three games out of first in 1902.
The present Giants team is getting long in the tooth as they feature veterans Bonds, Moises Alou, Omar Vizquel and Steve Finley, yet they carry on and try to improve on last year’s finish. Bonds’ pursuit of Ruth’s and Aaron’s home run totals, while dealing with steroid allegations, creates a charged atmosphere that manager Felipe Alou must deal with. The demanding fans, while enthusiastic with results. It remains to be seen whether there is another World Series appearance in store for this historic Giants franchise.
