Orlando Magic Team Info
When people mention Orlando, Florida, the first thing that they usually think about is Disney World, but Dwight Howard and the rest of the city’s NBA franchise are trying to bring this team back and make people think about Magic once again. The Magic have not made it into the playoffs for the last three years, but Howard, along with veteran Grant Hill and recent draft selection JJ Redick, are working to make this the season that gets the team back to the NBA Finals, a place Magic has not been since Shaquille O’Neal.
The last time the Magic drafted a center that was supposed to transform the team, it was the larger than life, Shaquille O’Neal. In contrast to the way Shaq made an immediate positive impact for the Magic, the Magic coaches decided to bring Howard along slowly while allowing veteran teammates to carry more of the scoring load for the team. Howard was content to work on his defense and rebounding at the time, but now that Coach Brian Hill is allowing him to open his offensive game, Dwight Howard is showing everyone why he was picked number one over all by the Magic the year he was drafted.
The Magic began playing in Orlando in 1989, and although they have not won a Championship yet, they have had more than their fair share of superstars. Besides Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard, other players who have worn Magic uniforms have been Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Horace Grant, and Tracy McGrady. Both Patrick Ewing and Dominique Wilkins even spent a little time playing for the Magic in the twilight of their careers. It is because the Magic has had these types of players in the organization that, no matter what it might seem like on paper they are sure to be competitive because they are backed by a franchise that already has a tradition of winning.
