Spurs Team Info

With the Spurs being the only major professional sports franchise in the area, the bond between the Spurs fans and players is unmatched in the rest of the NBA. Spurs players from the past and present are very active in the community and those who have played on the Spurs tend to stay in the area after they leave the team or retire. A couple examples of this long lasting relationship with the Spurs fans are David Robinson’s Carver Academy, the George Gervin Youth Center, and even Malik Rose’s restaurant, Malik’s Philly’s Phamous, which serves Philly style cheesesteak sandwiches. Even visitors to the city are embraced by the team and its fans, making it the perfect stop for anyone wanting to take in the sights and sounds of some Spurs basketball action.

The Spurs first year was the 1976-1977 season, after having been an ABA club since 1968. Fans and critics alike were skeptical about how ABA teams would perform after the transition, but the Spurs were one of the squads that rose above the criticism and let their stellar play speak for itself, as they went on to make the playoffs for the first seven years they were in the league.

The late eighties were not a great time for the Spurs, as their poor record caused much rumor and speculation that they should be relocated to another city. In 1987, the Spurs drafted center David Robinson, but would have to wait two years as he fulfilled his previous commitment to the United Stated Navy. Larry Brown was hired to take over the Spurs coaching duties for the 1988-1989 season, but when he was joined by Robinson in the 199-89-1990 season, the Spurs began to blossom. Over the next ten years, David Robinson and the Spurs would continue to improve every season, until the 1996-1997 season when Robinson was hampered by an injury which limited him to six games the entire year. The Spurs finished with a league worst record of 20-62 that year. The only bright spot of the season was that the Spurs finished in the lottery where they earned the first pick in the draft that year and selected consensus All-American Tim Duncan. Duncan’s addition to the team would see the Spurs win three Championships. Don't miss out on this years action, buy your Spurs Tickets today.
