Utah Jazz Team Info

Every year, Salt Lake City opens its doors to the Jazz fans, and year after year the Jazz puts a top contending team out there for its fans to cheer on. As Coach Jerry Sloan returns for another year at the head of the bench for the Jazz, the one thing the fans can count on is some no nonsense, fundamental basketball that is punctuated by the stellar play of superstar Andrei Kirilenko.

Beginning 1974, this franchise was marked by uneventful and mediocre play in its first ten years of existence. The biggest news that the team made was when it left the Big Easy for Salt Lake City, Utah. The fans in Salt Lake embraced this young franchise, but it wasn’t until the drafting of John Stockton in 1984 and power forward Karl “The Mailman” Malone in 1985 that the Jazz truly blossomed under the spotlight.

Under Coach Frank Layden, the Jazz were able to squeak into the playoffs every year that Stockton and Malone played, but quick exits in the first round of both the 1986 and 1987 seasons prompted a coaching change that would see Jerry Sloan take the reigns which was centered around its undeniably talented super stars. Perfecting the pick and roll play to clockwork precision around Stockton and Malone would be the key that would ultimately take the Jazz to two back-to-back NBA Finals appearances at the end of a twelve-year journey.
