Carolina Panthers Team Info
Panthers games are undoubtedly the most exciting in the league. Over the past three years the Panthers have gone to the Super Bowl and advanced to the NFC Championship. In 2005 Carolina had to win two big playoff games on the road and did it in sterling fashion before eventually falling. That loss exposed some weakness in Carolina’s game, weaknesses which head coach John Fox was quick to address in the offseason.
Fox believes in the running game. The Panthers pound it out as well as anyone and use the ground attack to set up the pass. For the past few years that ground attack has centered on DeShaun Foster. The fly in the ointment is that Foster has a history of injuries. Still, he’s the man. To provide a quality backup the Panthers used their 1st round draft choice on DeAngelo Williams, a powerful runner built on the Foster mold. Should Foster break down again, Williams will be able to step right in.
The Panthers passing game will once again feature wide receiver Steve Smith. To put it simply, Smith turned in an unbelievable year in 2005. With everyone in the stadium knowing the Panthers would be throwing to him, Smith led the NFL in yardage, touchdown catches, and receptions. Smith’s ability to get open in double coverage, and run after the catch, places him squarely at the top of receivers. But no receiver can function at such a high level for long without some help. John Fox needed a solid #2 receiver and got him with the addition of free agent Keyshawn Johnson. Johnson will prevent defenses from keying on Smith and provide the receiver the Panthers have been lacking.
On defense, everyone has their eyes on Julius Peppers. The defensive end is one of the top players, producing over 10 sacks a year in his first four years in the league. Peppers has also been known to line up as wide receiver is short yardage situations. When teams double up on Peppers, Mike Rucker has a field day from the other side. At cornerback the Panthers feature two of the best position players around in Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble. With DeAngelo Williams now in the fold and paired with DeShaun Foster, Carolina has a nucleus that could carry them to the NFL Playoffs for years to come and on to the Super Bowl.
