The Houston Rodeo consists of a variety of events, including a livestock show, a horse show, an international wine competition, concerts by some of today’s hottest musicians, and of course, the rodeo itself. The Houston rodeo features six ProRodeo events and one Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) event. These events are bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, and team roping. Held at Houston’s Reliant Stadium, the rodeo has been ranked as the world’s largest event of its kind, drawing more than one million spectators. It invites only the top competitors in the sport to participate, and boasts one of the largest purses in the sport. At this year's rodeo, the winners took home a purse of $748,000.
The livestock show features some of the world’s best livestock exhibitors, with the 2006 show hosting over 27,000 entries. Exhibitors show off all kinds of livestock, including cattle, swine, horses, sheep, and rabbits. The show also includes a junior livestock competition, in which children from the ages of eight to nineteen enter their animals under the direction of their agricultural science teachers. The most notable aspect of the junior livestock show is the junior market auction program, giving prize winners the chance to earn top dollar for their entries.
If bull riding and livestock aren’t your cup of tea, you can still find entertainment at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where some of the biggest names in music perform. Past performers include country legends George Strait and Martina McBride, comedy hit Larry the Cable Guy, and pop superstars Maroon 5 and Hilary Duff. Performances by these top entertainers make sure that everyone can find something to enjoy at the rodeo.
